fern's the word

for the opening my brother came up with a version of a prohibition cocktail called "the last word." typically a gin based cocktail with green chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, and freshly pressed lime juice, aaron's version for our store's drink included a st. germaine foam in place of the maraschino liqueur. the result was ridiculously good and dangerous. i could drink them all day long.

fern studio opening

sunday was the opening party for my shop, fern studio, and i couldn't have asked for a better evening. the weather was perfect, there were good tunes, great food made by my mother, a delicious shop cocktail made by my talented brother, and all of my favorite people in one place celebrating together.

thank you to my dad for seeing the potential of this space years ago and for all of your hard work to make it what it is. thank you to both of my parents for your unending support and for trusting my vision. thank you to my husband for all that you have done to make this a reality. thank you to my children for your adaptability and for being a constant reminder of what is truly important.

more photos here. all photos by my lovely sister in law, alex davis.

sharing details on that incredible cocktail tomorrow...

some friends are opening a new breakfast / lunch / coffee spot and we stopped by a few weeks ago for a plant consultation and to tour the space. with stark white walls and floors set against wood tables, benches, and bars made from reclaimed wood the restaurant epitomizes the simplicity, minimalism and functionality of scandanavian design. all of the interior wood is reclaimed tongue and groove longleaf yellow pine from a factory in Hamilton, Ohio and the patio fence will be made from red cedar coming from a farm in Moscow, Ohio that was previously an artisanal crafts school that offered green woodworking, blacksmithing, and raku pottery. the story and the respect for the materials that make up the restaurant along with the light that poured through those windows on what was a cold day make me want to live there. coming from tested restaurant owners who breathed life into a cincinnati staple, the rookwood, the same thought that went into the design of the space will surely be put into the menu. expect food and coffee that echoes the design of the space, ridiculously good in it's simplicity.

knowing that they wanted to keep the space clean and modern but also wanted to bring some life in we settled on some beautiful succulent filled ceramic vessels for the tables and a few for the walls. i'm thrilled for fern studio to a part of what these talented guys are doing and can't wait to share photos of the finished space. the kids approved as well! thank you robin mckerrell photography for grabbing your camera and snapping these great photos of cheapside's biggest fans.

and many thanks to the lovely little one love for her visit and post. ruthie may just be the cutest little shop girl i know. (okay second cutest)

as you probably know from my endless plugging, sunday was the city flea small mall event at the 21c museum hotel. as if the city flea wasn't already the coolest event around then they went and held it in the number one rated hotel in the country. seriously people, shopping all your favorite local shops, amongst a crazy collection of art, in a beautifully designed historic building...sunday was swoon worthy. it was packed full of shoppers and while it felt crazy at times and i somehow managed to survive the day on only one donut (thank you eli), a cocktail (thank you rachel), and a beer, it was a very successful day for fern studio and fun to share space with so many inspiring people.

that's right folks. that news i was going to share, the projects we have been working on, it's not another baby (at least not one that will grow inside of me). i am opening a store!

fern studio is a lifestyle design store and plant design studio selling potted plant designs, a curated collection of home goods and found objects, and custom vertical gardens. we are setting our sights on the beginning of october as our open date. the shop will be located in college hill and were very excited to be a part of the goodness and change happening there.

friends, can you do me a favor and head over to our facebook page and give it a little love. thanks for following along as we prepare for this next big thing in our lives.
